College Football Week 1 Talk

College Football Week 1 Talk

By Liam Willerup

Technically we just had the first week of college football, but there's a reason they call it Week 0 because the big games are Scott Frost being put on the hot seat and Chip Kelly finally winning a non-conference matchup. However Week 1 has some banger games, with big time programs debuting their new NIL babies.

Spencer Rattler Begins His Path to the Heisman vs Tulane

I imagine this will be far from a competitive matchup, as Oklahoma is far too talented for a Tulane team that really isn't terrible but far from Oklahoma level. Oklahoma opens at -26.5 on the score line, and could very well go well over that. Sophomore Marvin Mims appears poised to slot in as the main target for Rattler and the Sooners. If we are getting the consistent Rattler from last season, he could fulfill his potential and capture another Heisman for Oklahoma. If he doesn't put on a great performance, he'll probably just finesse as much NIL money as he can.

D'Eriq King Faces Off Against Alabama Youngster Bryce Young

The second best game of Week 1 will be the matchup between the #14 Hurricanes and the #1 Crimson Tide. Miami is a team led by one of the most veteran QBs in CFB history in D'Eriq King, coming off an injury and jumping into the biggest game of his career. Alabama will be sending out Mater Dei alum Bryce Young, who is next in line to continue the run of star Alabama QBs. Both teams boast some new weapons to the face of college football, as Bama wideout John Metchie III is top dog in the receiver room after Waddle and Smith departed to the NFL. Brian Robinson Jr. will slot into the lead role in his final season in CFB after Najee Harris departed. For the Canes, Oklahoma transfer Charleston Rambo will join a receiving room with Mike Harley to provide some top notch speed. This game can go one of two ways, a Bama dominating win or a close game where the Canes show their true colors.

The DJ Era Begins and JT Daniels Leads the Charge for Georgia

This should be the best game of Week 1 and here's why. Both teams are led by QBs that I believe can put on an offensive show. Daniels showed signs of talent in his few games at Georgia last season, and now adds one of CFB's best talents in Arik Gilbert from LSU. Daniels also just has that swagger, and seems to be Georgia's biggest idol. On the other side Clemson boasts a bigger talent (like he's literally 30 lbs heavier and an inch taller), in the St. John Bosco talent in DJ Uiagelelei. We saw some greatness from him in his few starts last season, and will look towards Justyn Ross to be the go-to receiver for him this next season. Georgia ranked #5 and Clemson ranked #3, the winner of this game will give us a clear picture of their playoff chances. As a Canes fan I would've loved seeing Miami vs. Bama as primetime, but game with a bigger impact will do just fine.

The Fighting Irish Take on the Seminoles in Tally

The Fighting Irish took a big hit from the NFL Draft, losing their starting QB, best two OL, two EDGEs and one of the best defensive players in CFB in JOK. Grad transfer Jack Coan will take over for the Fighting Irish, coming from Wisconsin to hopefully fill the role of Ian Book and bolster the offense. Despite losing many defensive pieces, they still have Kyle Hamilton, a player who should slot himself in as a top DB in the country this season. Despite not being the most fire-powered team, the Seminoles added a new chief to their offense in UCF transfer McKenzie Milton. Milton hasn't played much football recently after an injury at UCF, but in 2017 put up 37 TDs in the air and 8 on the ground for the National Champion Knights. If Milton can play anything like his 2017 self, he'll give the Fighting Irish a good test to begin the season.

The Rise of Donovan Mitchell and How Good is He?

By Liam Willerup           Heading into the 2017 NBA Draft, Donovan Mitchell was a much overlooked recruit. In terms of shooting guards in that class, he wasn't even ranked the highest (that honor going to Kentucky guard Malik Monk). However as the story goes, a phenomenal workout with the Utah Jazz was enough for them to make a move up to Pick #13 to select the guard out of Louisville. Today, Donovan Mitchell is easily one of the best shooting guards in the game. Probably only ranking behind players like Harden, Beal, and Booker (due to his Finals berth). The biggest news about him in recent weeks has been Stephen A. Smith's take that he is already the best player in Utah Jazz franchise history. While that is disrespectful to players like John Stockton and Karl Malone, Mitchell is not a stretch to have his name in that discussion down the line. A player who has averaged 20 PPG every season of his career so far, Mitchell has plenty of upside as a player. He stil...

It's Time for the Browns to Shake It Up

It's Time for the Browns to Shake It Up by Liam Willerup | UMiami     A recent discussion I brought onto our last podcast was the Cleveland Browns and their struggles this season. Former #1 pick from Oklahoma Baker Mayfield was the player that I highlighted as the problem in Cleveland this season. Despite an elite running game no matter the running back out there, Baker has simply regressed as a QB after last season. He is on pace for his worst statistical season of his career, even when this is the best team he has had in his career. Without OBJ has been when Baker's stats have looked the best, and no matter when he was on or off the field he's been bad. He currently has his lowest YPG and QBR of his career, while only having 11 TDs and 6 INT and 6 fumbles this season. With pressure for the Browns to deliver, it may look like Baker can't be that guy to deliver a championship to Cleveland. So let's say the Browns miss or exit early in the playoffs and I'm the G...

Is There Really a Clear Heisman Candidate?

Bryce Young, Matt Coral, or The Field: Is There Really a Clear Heisman Candidate? By Liam Willerup University of Miami     The most profound award in all of college football, the Heisman trophy. Last year we saw the rare occurrence of a wide receiver winning this award, as Alabama wideout DeVonta Smith scored 24 TDs on over 1800 scrimmage yards. However this season, as we are more than halfway through the season there isn't anyone that jumps off the board as a clear favorite. There hasn't been a candidate that has had a true Heisman defining game, such as last year when DeVonta Smith had 203 yards and 4 TDs versus Mississippi State or Joe Burrow when he dismantled Oklahoma in the playoffs. And even if these players this year didn't have a Heisman moment, they haven't had any crazy statistical seasons. If anything this season has been filled with teams and their star players failing to win games. It seemed like Ole Miss had a true Heisman winner in Matt Coral, bu...
